Sight Reading

Reading and Sight Reading are two different tasks, and should be distinguished. Sight Reading is the ability to read instantly a piece of music that is put in front of you. The ability to sight read means that the student can already read and knows how to decipher all the symbols on the page. Students must be able to read first!

As a separate skill, coaching is given to students to be able to sight read with ease. In Canada, there are many publications of graded sight reading books, which are very useful in training students in this skill.
