Suzuki Piano Pedagogy

Gail has been a Teacher Trainer in Piano of the Suzuki Association of the Americas(SAA) since 1984. Gail offers courses each year, although not all are offered in each calendar year.

Gail is also a designated facilitator of the SAA course entitled Suzuki Principles in Action (SPA).

What is unique about these courses compared to other pedagogy courses?

Suzuki piano teachers in training

Suzuki Pedagogy courses are offered by Teacher Trainers, who have pursued a rigorous program to become certified by the Suzuki Association of the Americas. Therefore, the trainers’ skills are considerable. Moreover, the pedagogy is concentrated because participants work through the repertoire from the beginning books onward and see, therefore, how the Suzuki program unfolds. Since the repertoire is set in each book, the participant has the opportunity to learn many points about the teaching of each piece and how it relates to the previous piece and the following one.

For each Unit there is a syllabus of what will be covered in the course of study. Included in each course, are discussions of issues related to teaching such as how to work effectively with parents, motivation among many others.

How are courses scheduled?

Typically, Gail offers a course in her studio based on requests made by teachers or prospective new Suzuki teachers. Gail and the participants work out class dates that suit everyone. Often course are offered for 5-6 hours on a Friday in the Studio in Guelph. For Unit 1, which is longer (28 hours), sometimes a Thurs. eve./Friday is scheduled, particularly if participants come from long distances.

How is a course set up?

A class day for a workshop course consists of:

Observation of Gail's students

Since pedagogy course require that participants observe lessons taught by Gail, students may come to the Studio for a lesson during the teacher training class day.

Additional observations are provided by DVDs of Gail’s students having lessons at level of course. It is planned that studio lessons will be available online as part of this website for participants duly enrolled in a course. Once participants are enrolled in one of Gail’s pedagogy courses, they will be given login credentials to view videos of Gail’s teaching in her Studio.
